CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Fire crews responded to a high rise building after smoke was seen coming from street grates in Downtown Cincinnati.

The smoke was spotted around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday morning near Walnut and E. 4th Street.

Initial arriving units discovered smoke emitting from the first floor vents on the east side of the Mercantile Building. Heavy smoke conditions were found in the sub-basement of the 19 story high-rise office building.

It was determined the fire was electrical in nature and Duke was requested. The fire was contained to the sub-basement. Due to the tedious nature of removing the smoke from the sub-basement, an additional Ladder Company was requested and Fire Crews were on the scene for over four hours ventilating and assisting Duke.

There were approximately 20 occupants in the building at the time of the fire and all were successfully evacuated. There were no injuries reported. Damage is estimated at $300,000.

Duke Energy is currently on the scene evaluating the scene. There currently is no power to the building and it is unable to be occupied

The incident temporarily shut down 4th Street between Main and Walnut.
