Two years later, Katelyn Markham's death ruled a homicide

(FOX19) - It's been two years since Katelyn Markham went missing from her Fairfield, Ohio home. On Tuesday, Indiana State Police released that her death has been ruled a homicide.

On Sunday, April 7, 2013 skeletal remains were located near Cedar Grove, IN. The Franklin County Coroner's Office, Indiana State Police, Franklin County Sheriff's Deputies, and Indiana Conservation Officers responded to the scene.

On April 8 those remains were positively identified as those of Katelyn Markham of Fairfield, OH who had been reported as missing on August 14, 2011.

After reviewing the results of post-mortem examinations conducted by various forensic specialists, the Franklin County Coroner has ruled that Katelyn Markham's cause of death is undetermined and her manner of death is Homicide.

Earlier today the Franklin County Coroner's Office released the remains of Katelyn Markham so that her family could make funeral arrangements.

A group of people also gathered at the Fairfield Police Department Tuesday, hoping for answers to many unanswered questions.

"A lot of people really care and felt like Katelyn needed a voice, and she needed a voice today that says justice needs to still be sought, and that this case can't go cold," said Shari Crystol, who helped search for Katelyn.

Crystol was just one of over a dozen who came out in support of justice for Katelyn.  Her father, David Markham, stopped by the rally saying Tuesday is a day he's been looking forward to, but also one he's dreaded.

The last two years have required a painful dose of patience that has been tried at every turn.

"This is the day where he got the news that his daughter has been released.  It's just a flood of emotions.  It just keeps coming back, and that's why we just need to keep the faith, you might say," said Dave Rader of the Ohio chapter of Texas Equusearch.

The Indiana State Police and the Fairfield Police continue working jointly in their investigation into the death of Katelyn Markham.

"Sometimes justice comes slow, but we're doing everything we can. I know sometimes it's not enough. Indiana State Police has stepped up, and they're helping. We will jointly solve this," said Officer Doug Day of the Fairfield Police Department.

"Eventually people will stop caring.  Well, guess what, sometimes people don't stop caring, and the people behind me, none of us are going to stop caring.  Katelyn needs a voice, and we'll be her voice until there's justice," Crystol told FOX19.
