Woman pulled from burning building, cat and dog perish

OAKLEY, OH (FOX19) - A woman trapped in her home's basement was pulled to safety by Oakley firefighters on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the 4100 block of Millsbrae Avenue around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. Dispatch received reports of a house on fire and a person heard screaming at the residence.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and a working fire at the two-story home. Crews arriving searched for a trapped person in the residence. A woman was located in the basement of the structure, trapped by fire in the stairwell and block glass security windows.

Two firefighters were able to bash through the windows with a sledge hammer and pull the woman to safety. Crews say that three dogs and six cats were also in the building. All but one cat and one dog were saved from the blaze.

Firefighters say that after an aggressive attack, they were able to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes.

Firefighters say that the cause of the fire has been determined as a candle, possibly knocked over by one of the pets.

Damage has been estimated at $40,000. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries in the blaze.
