State orders Sharonville abortion clinic to close
SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - Ohio's top doctor is ordering an abortion clinic near Cincinnati to close after it failed to find an area hospital that would enter into an agreement to take in women who suffer complications.
The decision by the Ohio Department of Health's director of health, Dr. Theodore Wymyslo, is being cheered by abortion opponents. Ohio Right to Life says the Lebanon Road Surgery Center in Sharonville is owned by a physician who has performed abortions for more than 30 years, Dr. Martin Haskell.
Wymyslo made the ruling after Ohio lawmakers last year prohibited publicly-funded hospitals, like the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, from entering into medical aid agreements with abortion providers, according to attorney Jennifer Branch, who represents the clinic. All of the other hospitals in the area are Catholic-owned, she said.
While the order from the health department says Lebanon Road Surgery Center must close on Feb. 4, Branch predicts a judge will allow it to remain open while her client appeals.
Meanwhile, Ohio Right to Life is celebrating this initial victory.
"We want to thank the health department for enforcing Ohio law and refusing to allow the abortion industry to escape complying with health and safety standards," Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life, said in a prepared statement.
