Doctor: What you need to know about the MMR vaccine

(FOX19) - By: Kate Flexter

Ohio Governor John Kasich is issuing an executive order, allowing pharmacists to administer the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in an effort to increase access to it.

This comes amid a nationwide outbreak of both measles and mumps.

The state epidemiologist, Mary DiOrio, says Ohio is part of the nation's largest outbreak of measles cases since 1994. There are at least 287 confirmed cases, up from about 160 cases two weeks ago. Ohio also has 418 probable and confirmed mumps cases reported.

The head of Ohio's pharmacy board says it's up to individual pharmacies to decide whether to carry it.  State officials say Ohioans should call ahead before heading to pharmacies to get vaccinated.

Dr. Kathleen Downey, a primary care physician in Wyoming and an Associate Professor at University of Cincinnati, told FOX19 what you need to know about the vaccinations.
