Mom charged with murder in death of 4-year-old girl
EAST PRICE HILL (FOX19) - A mother is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of her 4-year-old daughter.
Britney Roll Mayes, 24, was charged on Wednesday, nearly two weeks after her daughter Avery was found unresponsive in a bathroom at a Price Hill home, according to Cincinnati Police.
Avery was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital and died two days later.
"This could have been avoided," said Avery's paternal grandmother.
According to court documents, investigators said Mayes caused the death of her daughter "as a proximate result of the offender's committing a felonious assault."
The child's cause of death has not been released.
"You see stuff like this on the news all the time and you pray that it's never anybody that you know," Avery's aunt Angela Williams told FOX19 NOW last week. "She loved everything and loved everybody. Her life hadn't even started yet."
The grandmother said she had guardianship of the child from three weeks after her birth to near the time of her fourth birthday. She was then placed back with her mother.
"We had Avery safe in our home for almost four years," the grandmother said. "This is all a terrible shame and we need to mourn."
Mayes pleaded guilty to an attempted child endangerment charge in 2012, according to court documents.
Cincinnati Police say the homicide investigation is ongoing.
