Woman faces weapons charge in accidental shooting

MOUNT AIRY, OH (FOX19) - A 25-year-old woman faces a weapons charge after accidentally firing her semi-automatic handgun while cleaning it overnight, Cincinnati police officials said.

Crews responded to a 1:30 a.m. report Tuesday of a woman shot in the 5100 block of Hawaiian Terrace in Mt. Airy, said Lt. David Schofield, the night inspector.

When they arrived, they found Laquita Madeiros, 25, suffering from a gunshot wound to her left leg, he said.

She was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where she is expected to be treated and released.

Investigators concluded she accidentally shot herself while cleaning the weapon, he said.

She was charged with having weapons under a disability and possessing a defaced firearm, according to police. The gun's serial number was filed off, an arrest slip shows.

A previous criminal conviction makes it illegal for her to have a gun, court records show.

She is on probation for two years after pleading guilty in September to an April indictment of carrying concealed weapons, records state.

She also was indicted in April with possession of cocaine, but that charge was dismissed.
