SOUTH CUMMINSVILLE, OH (FOX19) - "It's something I can never imagine that would happen," said Latrice Rogers, Elijah Wheeler's mother. "I know it happens. I just didn't think it would happen to me."
"He [Wheeler] was smart, very articulate, everything," said Elijah Wheeler Senior, Wheeler's father.
Community leaders want to know why it is getting so violent in and around South Cumminsville. Wheeler's family is looking for answers too.
"I'll never hear that voice again or anything else. Somebody took something away from us that we will never get back," said Rogers.
Wheeler's accused killer, 29-year-old Khalia English, is a familiar face to Wheeler's family. Wheeler's father said that English was like a relative to them.
Now, things are different, but Wheeler's family said they are not seeking revenge and instead are asking for peace.
While police officers increase patrol in the area and English's case moves through the court system, Wheeler's family is preparing for difficult times ahead.
"His memory will never go anywhere. That's something we'll never let happen, so we'll be here Christmas. We'll be here Thanksgiving. We'll be here birthday. We'll be here regular days," said Rogers. "It's just going to be hard for a long time."
English is in jail on murder charges.
Police said that overall, shootings are down across the city, but there are areas where they're seeing an uptick in violence.
They are still investigating this crime. Anyone who has information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
